Requirements
SafeKeeper requires macOS 15 or later.
Getting started
- Grant SafeKeeper access to your photo library when prompted. It needs this to read the originals it backs up.
- Create a backup and choose a destination — an external drive, or any folder you control.
- Pick a schedule. SafeKeeper then runs and verifies in the background.
Common questions
Where are my backed-up photos?
In the destination folder you chose, as ordinary files. Nothing is stored in a proprietary format, so you can browse, copy, or restore them with the Finder even without SafeKeeper installed.
What does verification do?
After copying, SafeKeeper re-reads what it wrote and compares it against the source. This catches silent corruption — files that were damaged in transit or on disk without any error being reported.
The menu bar icon or widget is missing
SafeKeeper's background helper runs as a login item. Check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions and make sure SafeKeeper is allowed to run in the background.
A backup says it needs permission
macOS revokes access to a folder if it moves or if the drive is reformatted. Open the backup in SafeKeeper and re-select the destination to restore access.
